- Plant drought-tolerant favorites: I fill pots and beds with lavender, rosemary, olive or citrus if space allows. I group plants by water needs and top with gravel or crushed stone to cut down on chores.
- Layer lighting for long evenings: I combine string lights, lanterns and a few uplights to highlight trees or walls. I choose warm bulbs and battery candles so the glow stays soft and forgiving.
- Use shade that breathes: I add a pergola with climbing vines or a simple retractable awning to give filtered shade. I hang light curtains sometimes to catch the breeze and add privacy.
- Keep finishes low-maintenance: I pick outdoor fabrics with removable covers and stain-resistant finishes on furniture. I favor large-format tiles or compacted gravel that handle sun and foot traffic with little fuss.
